Inspired by Hiroshige Utagawa
The title means "Ueno(no)Okachimachi(landscape)". It depicts a night view that combines both modern and traditional aspects of Tokyo. Hiroshige painted several "One hundred Famous Views of Edo" featuring Ueno, but Ameya Yokocho (Ameyoko), the subject of this work, did not exist in his time, as it was a shopping district created from the scorched earth of Tokyo during the Pacific War. This work is one of a series of night views of the city ("Dogenzaka Udagawa," "Shinjuku Godzilla Road," etc.) that cannot be depicted in Hiroshige's time.
